Working As A Physio in NZ

To work as a Physiotherapist in NZ there are two requirements.

  1. You will need to complete registration with the New Zealand Board of Physiotherapy - More info and relevant links below.
  2. You will also need a NZ work Visa

The New Zealand Board of Physiotherapy assesses each overseas application on a case by case basis, so individual applications should be made to them. There is no accreditation of overseas courses, with the exception of Australian Certified Physiotherapists. Each application is individually assessed.

AUSTRALIAN QUALIFIED PHYSIOTHERAPISTS

Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMR)
If you currently hold full registration and are entitled to practise physiotherapy in any Australian state or territory you are entitled to seek registration in New Zealand under TTMR Act.

HOW TO APPLY

OVERSEAS QUALIFIED PHYSIOTHERAPISTS

Overseas qualified physiotherapists under Section 12(2) of the HPCA Act 2003.

TIMING ALLOWANCE:

On average the registrations process with the NZ Physio board can take from 6 weeks - 3 months (if all documentation are in order and no additional material is requested). The visa process can also take about 6 weeks at the minimum. So if you are looking at coming to New Zealand and have a set date in mind, then ensure this is at least 3 – 6 months after you’ve lodged your application for registration at least.
